Rei Munakata 

Rei Munakata is rapidly establishing a reputation as one of the most exciting young conductor in the field of contemporary and experimental music. He is currently the artistic director and the principal conductor of the Curious Chamber Players, Stockholm based contemporary music ensemble. He has led the group to numerous world premiere performances all over the world. He is also the conductor of ensemble Scenatet in Århus and Mimitabu in Göteborg. He is frequently collaborating with new music ensembles such as Gageego! Göteborg, Kammarensemble Neue Musik Berlin, SMASH Ensemble Salamanca, Esbjerg Ensemble, Athelas Sinfonietta Copenhagen, KammarensembleN Stockholm, Ensemble Ars Nova Malmö, Ensemble Aleph Paris, Oslo Sinfonietta, and Klangforum Wien.

Munakata is hailed for his interpretation of avantgarde music through his appearances in numerous new music festivals such as Darmstädter Ferienkurse, IMPULS Graz, Gaudeamus Music Week Utrecht, Extension Paris, Intersonanzen Potsdam, Borusan New Series Istanbul, Nordic Music Days, Ung Nordiska Musik, Stockholm New Music, Festival de Musica de Alicante, Oslo Chamber Music, Athelas New Music, Estonian Music Days, GAS Göteborg, Connect Malmö, Sound Scotland, SPOR Århus, Shanghai New Music Week, Beijing Modern Music, and AFEKT Tartu.

Munakata is regularly invited to give workshops in conducting, composition, and orchestral technique in music colleges and schools such as Birmingham Conservatoire of Music, Cambridge University, University of Aberdeen, and Högskolan för Musik och Scen vid Göteborgs Universitet.

Born in Yokohama in 1976, and raised in both Japan and China as his home countries, Munakata currently resides in Sweden and USA. He gratefully acknowledge the support from institutions such as Kulturrådet, Konstnärsnämnden, Sven och Dagmar Saléns Siftelse, and Prins Carl Gustavs Stiftelse from the Royal castle of Sweden.
