2nd INTERNATIONAL BALTIC PIANO COMPETITION

REGULATIONS

The Second International Baltic Piano Competition is organised by the Stanislaw Moniuszko Academy of Music in Gdansk and will be held in Gdansk from April 24th until May 3rd 2010.

The competition is open to pianists of all nationalities, born in the years 1977 – 1993.

The Jury will comprise of distinguished musicians from Poland and abroad. The Jury will act according to the Jury Regulations approved during its first session. All decisions of the Jury are final and incontestable.

Applications should be sent by mail by 1st February 2010 (the postal date on the envelope is valid) to the following address:

Documents to be enclosed with the Application Form:
- a biographical note (musical education and artistic achievements) in Polish or English
- a copy of an official document confirming the date of birth
- 2 recent photographs
- a record of payment of the 100 Euros registration fee

The registration fee will not be returned if a candidate decides to resign from the competition after 1st of march 2010.

The Second international Baltic Piano Competition will comprise of four stages. No more than twenty competitors will qualify for he second stage, no more than six for the semi final and no more than three for the final. In exceptional cases the Jury may qualify additional candidates to the second stage, though the overall number must not exceed twenty three. Auditions shall be held in the alphabetical order of the contestants’ names, beginning with the drawn letter. The competition organizers will inform those qualified to take part in the competition via email. The candidates will also receive information of the time and date of their performance in the first stage via e-mail by 1st of March 2010.

All the competition performances will be heard in public. The organizers reserve the right to record, film or broadcast (radio, television, internet) competition performances free of charge. Competition winners are also obliged to perform at the competition winners’ concert free of charge. Failure to meet any of these requirements means forfeiture of the competition prize.

Programme
First Stage (20 - 25 minutes)
Any compositions chosen by the candidate. The programme should enable candidates to demonstrate the full range of their individual piano playing skills.

Second Stage (45 - 50 minutes)
- Ludwig van Beethoven - any sonata apart from Op. 2 no 1, Op. 10 nos 1 and 2, Op. 14 nos 1 and 2, Op. 49 nos 1 and 2, Op. 79, Op. 106
- any compositions chosen by the candidate

Third Stage - semi-final
- Fryderyk Chopin – any composition or compositions (30 - 40 minutes)
- any compositions chosen by the candidate, apart from those written by the composers, whose works have been played in the First and Second Stage. (30 - 40 minutes)

Fourth Stage - final
One of the following concertos:

G-major KV 453
d-minor KV 466
A-major KV 488
c-minor KV 491
D-major KV 537
B-flat - major KV 595

Fryderyk Chopin
Concerto e-minor Op. 11
Concerto f-minor Op. 21

The programme should be performed from memory.

Prizes and awards
1st prize 7.000 Euros
2nd prize 3.500 Euros
3rd prize 2.000 Euros

Awards of distinction - identical for three semi finalists who fail to get through to the final. 500 Euros

Special award for the best performance of Frederic Chopin's work 1.300 Euros

The Jury has the right to vote for changes in the number and variety of prizes and awards granted provided the value of individual prizes will not be altered.

The competition organizers will not cover the travel nor the accommodation expenses incurred by contestants attending the competition in Gdansk. The competitors may book a room in the “Dom Muzyka” hotel, located on the campus of the Academy of Music. The bookings should be made at the email address: biuro@dom-muzyka.pl

Any eventual uncertainties regarding the Regulations will be resolved on the basis of the Polish version.
