JÓZEF STOMPEL (Poland)

Graduated from the State Music University in Katowice, where he studied with professor Wanda Chmielowska. Continued his education in Salzburg with professor Brunon Seidlhofer.

Prizewinner at the National Mozart Competition (1956, 2nd prize), the 1st International G. Enescu Competition in Bucharest (1958, 4th prize) and the 6th International F. Chopin Competition Piano Competition in Warsaw (1960, award of distinction).

Since 1958 Józef Stompel performs in recitals, chamber music concerts and concerts with orchestra in Poland and abroad. He has played in the National Philharmonic in Warsaw and in all other polish philharmonic halls as well as in several important concert halls in his home country. He has also given concerts at renowned festivals, such as “Warsaw Autumn Festival”, Polish Piano Festival in Słupsk, Chopin Festival in Duszniki Zdrój, “Chopin Days” in Antonin, Chopin Festival in Mariánské Lázně. He plays the most important works of the piano repertory and gives premieres of contemporary pieces by polish composers such as B. Szabelski, W. Friemann, J. Gablenz, E. Bogusławski, J. W. Hawel, J. Świder, R. Twardowski, J. Talarczyk, K. Baculewski. The artist has made numerous archive recordings as well as recordings for radio and television. “Polskie Nagrania” released his CD with works by W. Żeleński and “Classicord” a CD with pieces by Chopin and Gershwin.

Since 1991 Mr. Stompel is a professor at the Academy of Music in Katowice. Among his students there are prizewinners of national and international competitions. He also gives master classes for pianists and leads seminars for piano teachers in countries such as Poland, Belgium, Argentina, Japan, Uruguay, USA, Canada and China. He works as a jury member at national and international competitions. 1994 he was a jury member at the International G. Bachauer Competition in Salt Lake City, 2000 and 2005 at the International F. Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw.

Józef Stompel is the Vice President of the board of the Frederick Chopin Society in Warsaw. He has received several state awards and distinctions, such as the Commander’s Cross of the Order of the Rebirth of Poland and the Golden Cross of Merit. Twice he was awarded the Prize of the Minister of Culture.
